Sony has announced a cut back in their launch numbers.
The company originally was planning to ship one million units to Japan and the United States. Now Sony is claiming the number will only be approximately 500,000 with 100,000 going to Japan and 400,000 coming stateside for launch day. Sony went on to say that shipments will continuously be replenished on a weekly basis as they plan to have one million units in stores for the holiday season.
Newly appointed head of corporate communications for SCEA, Dave Karraker said to MTV, "People shouldn't fixate on the day-one allocation number. They should instead be more interested in the overall units available through the holidays, which will be 1 million to 1.2 million, which are significant amounts that will provide retail supply week over week with no dips in available stock."
Sony still has not reduced their forecast for the total shipments of six million units for fiscal year 2007. That means at this time they have plans to have six million units shipped by the end of March 2007.
