Nolan Bushnell: New Encryption Chip Will End PC PiracyPosted 1:36pm Tue May 27, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: pc, piracy, nolan bushnell

There's no doubt that piracy of PC games has been a huge problem for the industry over the past few years. Hotly anticipated titles such as Crysis have suffered at retail because of the ease of downloading them from various online piracy communities, forcing PC developers to bring their games to consoles in hopes of turning a profit.

However, PC piracy may soon be on its deathbed, as Shacknews has reported that Atari founder Nolan Bushnell has announced details about a new encryption chip that is becoming standard on motherboards in new PCs.

"What that says is that in the games business we will be able to encrypt with an absolutely verifiable private key in the encryption world--which is uncrackable by people on the internet and by giving away passwords--which will allow for a huge market to develop in some of the areas where piracy has been a real problem," Bushnell said at a Wedbush Morgan Securities conference last Thursday.

Bushnell hopes that this development will lead to the emergence of a strong PC market in regions such as Asia where piracy continues unabated.

Age of Conan Racks Up 400k In SalesPosted 11:31am Tue May 27, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: age of conan, funcom, pc, mmo

Thanks to a fierce marketing campaign as well as years of positive showings at E3, Age of Conan has made quite a splash in the PC community since its release last week, having sold 400k units according to GameDaily. This makes the game one of the fastest-selling PC games in history, which becomes even more impressive when you consider that it's an MMO.

It's encouraging for MMO developers to see another MMO besides WoW doing well. If Age of Conan can build momentum and continue to gain subscribers, it could send the message that you don't have to be able to take on WoW to be successful.

While it's unlikely that anyone can challenge Blizzard for control of the MMO market right now (well, maybe if you have a billion dollars), successful releases of future MMOs such as Warhammer Online as well as the continued success of Age of Conan could start to slowly erode Blizzard's subscriber base.

For now, it'll be interesting to see how Age of Conan performs in the coming weeks.

The Sims Tops 100 Million Units SoldPosted 9:24pm Thu Apr 17, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: the sims, pc, ea

Will Wright's army of simulation games has changed the face of PC gaming over the years, but few games have had the impact of The Sims, which he unleashed back in 2000. Being the top-selling PC franchise of all time and having amazing longevity (The Sims 2 and its expansions are consistently at the top of PC software charts every year), it has now passed another milestone, as EA announced yesterday that the game has sold over 100 million units.

Rod Humble, Head of Studio for the Sims Label, had this to say:

"At this milestone, we want to thank players of The Sims everywhere for making The Sims such a worldwide phenomenon. The Sims has been an interactive experience for people around the globe to explore their passion for creativity and we're thrilled to be a part of that. From building houses and relationships, from first kisses to a toddler's first step, from kitchen fires - and even visits from ghosts, players have told more than 100 million unique and fun stories!"
