Analyst Claims That US Wii Fit Shortages Are DeliberatePosted 1:35pm Mon Jun 02, 2008 by Zach Lott Tags: Wii, Nintendo, Wii Fit

The name of the game for the Wii over the past year and a half has been supply shortages. Nintendo's focus on a more casual market has yielded a demand for the Wii that far outstrips available supply. Many have accused Nintendo of intentionally holding back shipments, and, according to GameSpot, this may be the case with software as well as hardware, as Wii Fit has been unusually scarce here in the US since its release last month.

The game has also been in short supply in Europe, but Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes that the region has received far more units of Wii Fit than America. In a story published by the LA Times, he estimated that Nintendo has shipped 2 million units of the game to Europe while only shipping 500,000 units to North America. He cites the strong euro over the weakened dollar as the main cause.

"The shortage demonstrates one consequence of the weak dollar. We're seeing companies ignore their largest market simply because they can make a greater profit elsewhere. They know that Americans will be just as fat a few months from now," he said.

Even though the game has been actively marketed in the US, it looks like the headaches for people who just want to enjoy the Wii aren't over yet.
