Ragnarok Online: Play for Free, Now! (Legally.)Posted 10:17pm Thu Oct 16, 2008 by Ryan Fulton Tags: Ragnarok Online, MyungJin Lee, Gravity, Free

Ragnarok Online, the MMO that put artist Myung-Jin Lee on the Western map, is now officially and legally available for free.

Gravity Interactive, the purveyor of all things International Ragnarok Online, has gone live with their Valkyrie server where you can come to study at the altar of ungodly grinding without paying alms.  If I weren't already completely burnt out on Ragnarok Online from a series of addictions in the years past I would be rather tempted to try my hand at RO again.

SCEA's John Koller: PSP's Got Games in 2009, Really. Probably?Posted 9:46pm Thu Sep 25, 2008 by Ryan Fulton Tags: PSP, Sony, John Koller, SCEA, Edge Online

On Tuesday Edge Online posted a feature detailing the decline of third party games for the PSP.  Backed with data the findings seemed almost damning despite the last year’s increase in PSP sales.  Within two days, John Koller, SCEA’s hardware marketing head, responded to this report.

In the short, boring, and abstract, the answer is that somewhere around two years ago businesses decided that the PSP wasn’t selling super well and decided to push their resources elsewhere, specifically into the then emerging current-gen consoles.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR) Ships To StoresPosted 12:34pm Mon Sep 15, 2008 by Tim Grube Tags: Warhammer Online Age of Reckoning, WAR, PC, Electronic Arts, Mythic

Mythic Entertainment and Electronic Arts today announced that Warhammer
Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR), will ship tomorrow to retail stores across North America, Europe, and Oceania in preparation for launch on September 18th

“This is truly a historic day for both EA and Mythic as we prepare to send more copies of WAR to retailers than any other newly launched MMORPG in North America and Europe. Over the course of our beta, over a million gamers throughout the world sent a clear signal to us - they want WAR, and we are more than happy to oblige them,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic Entertainment. “In three days the real battle begins – we have declared September 18th the ‘Day of Reckoning,’ and WAR will soon be upon us!”

WAR set a company record for the most retail pre-orders placed by consumers for a PC title in EA’s 26 year history. Overall, the company has sold 1.5 million units of WAR to retailers.

GB Review: Soul Calibur IV (PS3)Posted 6:26pm Fri Aug 01, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: Namco Bandai, Soul Calibur IV, PlayStation 3, review, PlayStation Network, online

For those of you unfamiliar with Namco's Soul Calibur series, it's the one with the slew of weird characters vying for two powerful swords--soul calibur and soul edge--to rule, destroy, or save the world, and most of the time they look exceptionally good while doing it. Soul Calibur IV continues that trend with 33 characters seeking to use the swords to accomplish their own (often selfish) desires, including two bonus "guest" characters from the Star Wars universe: the legendary Darth Vader and the mysterious "apprentice" from the upcoming Force Unleashed. Though the game clearly fails to revolutionize the genre, it accomplishes everything it sets out to do quite well, and the addition of online play and a very robust character creation system keep the game addictive.

score: 4 out of 5

Click here for an explanation of our review and scoring format.

As with any fighting game, Soul Calibur IV pits you against an onslaught of characters that you must take down by lowering their health bar with flashy moves and powerful combos. Namco also included a soul gauge feature that changes color depending on your performance; block too often or receive too many strong attacks and the gauge will start flashing red, entering a "soul crush" state, at which point you're vulnerable to a one-hit KO attack called a critical finish. To keep things fresh (and because it's mildly entertaining to witness characters fighting in customizable undergarments), equipment destruction is a vital component of any fight; equipment condition is displayed in a three slot vertical bar designating head, upper body, and lower body gear, and enough attacks to the same area will break the equipment.

Konami Confirms Pre-order Bonus for MGS4Posted 5:49pm Thu Feb 28, 2008 by Shiva Stella Tags: Metal Gear Solid 4, Konami, Metal Gear Online
For those of us who already own a PlayStation 3 but would still like a nifty Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots bonus, Konami is launching a pre-sell program in April that'll include a Metal Gear Saga 2.0 DVD.

The DVD features character biographies, trailers, a 20th Anniversary special, and a code for accessing the Metal Gear Online beta test.

The game includes the Metal Gear Online "starter pack" that allows for up to 16-player matches and is set to ship on June 12, 2008.

If you don't yet own a PlayStation 3, Konami has also teamed up with Sony for an MGS4 console bundle (MSRP $499) that includes the 80GB unit, a Dualshock 3 controller, and the game.

As an aside, I have no idea what this image means.

EVE Online Coming To SteamPosted 11:36am Wed Jan 23, 2008 by Tim Grube Tags: PC, EVE Online, Steam

The first MMO title to hit Steam? I believe so...CCP and Valve have announced that EVE Online will be the first MMO title to be available on Steam.  To promote the launch, they will be offering a 21 day free trial of EVE for Steam gamers, and an addition 5 dollars off their first months subscription. Nice of them, eh?

The new account numbers were also revealed in the press release showing off Steams rapid success. It appears Steam is clocking in at 13 million accounts worldwide. As for you EVE fans out there, to continue CCP's stance, EVE Expansions will still be free so the "universe" can grow.

Confirmed: Metal Gear Online and MGS4 To Be BundledPosted 12:20pm Fri Dec 14, 2007 by Aaron Dunlap Tags: metal gear solid 4, metal gear online, playstation 3, playstation the official magazine
One thing that's always vexed Metal Gear fans is Metal Gear Online. We know that the online component of MGS3: Subsistence was just a "beta test" for the larger, more expansive gameplay to be found in Metal Gear Online. We know that it's being made at the same time and by the same people as Metal Gear Solid 4, and that it's being released at the same time. What didn't make sense was that they were selling it as a separate game; with a separate price tag.

According to the January, 08 issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine (because, y'know, it's January already), tucked away in a multi-page spread about MGS4 is the juicy tidbit that Metal Gear Online would be bundled with (or even on the same disk as) MGS4, which has a scheduled release date of "Whenever."

Though the only online Metal Gear game I want is one where only I'm Snake and everybody else on the internet is a hapless guard defending the base I'm infiltrating, Metal Gear Online has enough features that I might be impressed. As soon as I get a PS3, which will either be the day the game is released or the day somebody confirms for reaslies that there is no way in hot hell that the game will land on the Xbox 360.
